Title: Reminiscences of Golf on St. Andrews Links Author: Balfour, James Place: Edinburgh Publisher: David Douglas Date: 1886 Description: [6], 68 + [2, ads.] pp. 6¼x4¼, bound in recent maroon morocco, lettered in gilt, new marbled endpapers. First Edition. Rare and previously unrecorded issue, pre-dating any other known copy found on record, with printed "1886" date on the title page. All other copies located at auction and in various references (bibliographies and in libraries) all list and show the first edition as 1887. Appendix references in the back all end with 1886 dates and publisher’s ad for Simpson’s The Art of Golf states "Price to Subscribers until 31st May 1887," being an advance subscription price before publication for that title, which is the same found in the 1887 edition. The Balfours were a well-known golfing family, the most skillful of whom was James' son, Leslie Balfour-Melville, who won the British Amateur in 1895. The book relates tales of the Old Course during a time when there were relatively few golfers and is of great interest because it gives one of the few first-hand accounts of how the course was played in those early days. Originally bound in wrappers. "One of the rarest of all golf items" – Murdoch 30; Donovan & Murdoch 600. Lot Amendments Condition: Pages a bit age toned, darkening to upper margins caused by old smoke wear (darkest on pp. 34-39 and 52-53), thin 1" red stain on rear ad pages; internally very good in a fine modern leather binding. Item number: 171582
