The Balfours were a well-known golfing family, the most skillful of whom was James' son, Leslie who won the British Amateur in 1895. The book relates tales of the Old Course during a time when there were relatively few golfers and is of great interest because it gives one of the few first-hand accounts of how the course was played in those early days.
