Beschreibung:

The Matchless G50 was, in so many ways, a 90mm x 78mm ‘big brother’ of Associated Motor Cycles’ highly successful AJS 7R. A badly-kept secret, it first appeared in 1958, in time for the TT, to the consternation of those who thought that AMC could have, and should have, produced the model years previously. Too late to be greatly competitive long-term in international classic races, the G50 shone on short circuits and, of course, still does in the many events for which it is eligible. It is seldom that an example such as this, which has had only one owner and rider since being built, comes on to the market. According to the owner, the Matchless was new in 1968 and was last raced three years later, since when it has been garaged as a keepsake in the hands of its original custodian. The original builder and supplier of the G50, fitted with its up-rated gearbox from new, was the known and respected Ray Cowles, of Pontypool in Wales, whose transfer remains on the frame, and who maintained the machine during its racing career. This particular G50 was a formidable performer in the hands of its veteran rider on short-circuits, taking, for instance, the lap record at Silloth in 1969. Both the rider and the G50 retired from racing in 1970 and has therefore remained in ‘time-warp’ condition, without any form of damaging modification, since that date, almost all of the paintwork and componentry being completely original and as built. It last ran, non-competitively, in 2002. Offered complete with its original fairing and some historical material, the G50 will, following the re-commissioning essential with a racing machine, be ready to resume its track career in the hands of only its second owner.
