Left-hand drive. By the time this Maserati Ghibli left the factory in Modena, the company had been successfully building luxury supercars for more than a decade. At the heart of thier designs were two outstanding engines, the 3500cc six and the 4719cc V8, both with twin-overhead camshafts and providing enough power to sweep the six-cylinder Sebring and the sumptuous V8 Mexico four seater coupe up to 230kph (138mph). Introduced at the Turin Motor Show in late 1966 as a two door two-seater coupe and an open spider, the Tipo 115 Ghibli was developed from the Mexico, sharing its very capable tubular, well boxed, stiff steel chassis and by now well proven independent front with live rear suspension layout. Weighing 3000lbs, or around 600/1000lbs less than a Mexico, the car was clad with a sensationally exotic bodyshell of great elegance designed by Guigiario and built by Ghia. Taken over by Citroen in 1968, Maserati at last had sufficient funds to develop and correctly manufacture their products and the Ghibli was to benefit, providing Modena with a genuine competitor for Lamborghini and Ferrari. Light weight and an aerodynamically efficient outline contributed to a maximum speed of close to 160mph. Indeed, it was at one time said to be the world's fastest production car. The graceful Ghibli was to stay in production until 1973, by which time it had a 4.9 litre engine delivering 366bhp and 1149 had been built, making it, after the Tipo 101 3500GTI, by far the best-selling Maserati of the era. Delivered new in Switzerland to the lady vendor, this lovingly maintained specimen has no more than a documented 5,967km to its credit. It has full air-conditioning, a radio and tape recorder, together with an owner's manual. The original paintwork is assessed as very good, with just a few paint chips. As would be commensurate with such a low mileage, the interior is in exceptional condition. New tyres have recently been fitted to the alloy wheels for safety reasons, as the original ones were nearly thirty years old! On test the Maserati impressed as driving like a new car and now provides an opportunity to acquire an extremely rare, exceptionally low mileage, one-owner example of the Ghibli.
