MANILIUS, Marcus (fl. 1st-Century AD). Astronomicon libri quinque, edited by Joseph Scaliger.... MANILIUS, Marcus (fl. 1st-Century AD). Astronomicon libri quinque, edited by Joseph Scaliger. [Heidelberg:] In Officina Sanctandreana, 1590. 3 parts bound in one volume, 8vo (171 x 115mm). Woodcut printer's devices on the titles to the first two parts, headpieces and initials, woodcut diagrams (lacks blank leaf a8, as often, substantial sections quite heavily browned, occasional lighter spotting, staining and browning, a few darker spots occasionally affecting letters). Later cloth-backed paper boards (first signature starting, rubbed and lightly stained). Provenance: old annotation to first title and endpapers; later label removed from rear endpaper. The editio princeps of this didactic Latin poem, written c. 30-40 AD, and the earliest known work on astrology and the first to name systems of astrological Houses, was printed in Nuremberg in 1473, having been re-discovered by the Italian humanist Poggio Bracciolini in c. 1416. It then fell into comparative neglect until A. E. Housman produced a scholarly edition, still considered authoritative, between 1903 and 1930. The second edition to be edited by Joseph Scaliger. Adams M362; Houzeau & Lancaster I, 1037; cf. Kenney 113 & 167 (1655 ed.); Riccardi Manilius 44.
