Woodcut device on titles to the first two parts, woodcut diagrams, small woodcut floriated opening initials. (Without à8 in part one, small worm hole in first title, some heavy browning, Ccc2 with piece torn from margin). BINDING: Spanish mid-17th century binding for Don Ramiro Núñez de Guzmán, Duke of Medina de las Torres, front cover blocked with his arms impaled with those of his second wife Anna Carafa Aldobrandini, surrounded by an acrologic inscription, block on back cover with an emblematic 'impresa' or device also within a shield and surrounded by the same inscription, gilt-lettered spine with two bands, gilt edges (one corner worn, a few worm holes and chip marks). Oldham, Shrewsbury School Bindings p. 120. PROVENANCE: Don Ramiro Núñez de Guzmán, Duke of Medina de las Torres (binding). The Duke of Medina de las Torres (d. 1668) was the son-in-law of the Conde-Duque de Olivares by his first marriage to the latter's only legitimate daughter, D a María de Guzmán, marquesa de Heliche. He served as viceroy of Naples from 1638-1644, and after his return to Madrid was the unsuccessful rival of Don Luis de Haro for the position of privado to Philip IV. He owned a large library. The inventory post mortem lists 430 manuscripts and over 4500 printed books, though unfortunately without giving the titles. They were uniformly bound in red morocco with the Duke's arms impaling those of his wife, Anna Carafa Aldobrandini, princess of Stigliano and duchess of Sabbionetta, on the front cover; and his device, a plant and grasses below a starry sky with the motto 'Revolta Foecundant,' on the back cover.
