KEITH, DORA WHEELER. 1856-1940.Archive of original artwork and family memorabilia, including: 1. Album of illustrations by Dora Wheeler Keith containing approximately 82 images, most charcoal drawings, a few in watercolors, most of them drafts or originals of illustration art, mounted on card stock (some loose), as well as some printed versions of her art in the form of Christmas cards and other imprints, bound in hand-stitched linen over boards, 360 x 300 mm, corners frayed, browning, chipping to some edges. 2. Painting of Dora Wheeler Keith by Rosina Emmet Sherwood watercolor on paper, 515 x 352 mm (image size), matted and framed. Light yellowing to paper. 3. Sketchbook containing 32 pencil sketches, some laid down and others drawn directly on the sketchbook pages, not signed, some bearing dates ranging from 1860 to 1866, with 4 small clipped pencil sketches laid down to front paste-down, oblong 8vo (175 x 250 mm), bound in brown cloth. Rubbed at corners, some chipping to edges, browning. 4. 22 watercolor illustrations and sketches, some mounted on board, a few signed, dating from 1872 to 1929, various approximately 200 x 180 mm to 320 x 310 mm, most with staining, chipping to corners and edges, and browning. 5. A group of 6 letters (5 autograph and 1 typed), between various members of the family and associates of Dora Wheeler Kieth, dating between 1895 and 1912, including a letter on American Association for the Advancement of Science stationery from Leland O. Howard to Dora Wheeler Kieth regarding a search through records of the Society of Colonial Wars. Dates range from 6. 24 photographs of various family members, including some of Dora Wheeler Keith many removed from a photo album, some bearing captions and dates, approximately 5 x 7 inches and smaller. 7. Group of 10 typed letters between Dr. Ila Weiss and H. Keith Simpson regarding the preparation of a book about Candace Wheeler. (H. Keith Simpson is the grandson of Candace Wheeler). 8. Miscellaneous clipped sketches in pencil and ink, printed illustrations by other artists, and some printed Christmas cards with illustrations by Keith. 9. WHEELER, CANDACE. Dora Wheeler was the daughter of Candace Thurber Wheeler a prominent woman designer who championed the involvement of women in the arts. Dora and her family traveled extensively in the years after the Civil War; she was largely educated in Weisbaden, and spent summers in Montreux, sketching incessantly, as can be seen in many of the sketches included here. She studied under William Meritt Chase in New York, and was well established as an illustration artist prior to her marriage to lawyer Boudinot Keith. She was also a talented portraitist, and her works can be seen in museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and the National Portrait Gallery in Washington DC.
