TURGENEV, IVAN. 1818-1883.Autograph Letter Signed ("Ivan Tougneneff"), in English, to Charles Scribner, 2 pp, 8vo (200 x 125 mm), Paris, September 16, 1881, matted and mounted in double-sided framed to 280 x 200 mm. To Mr. Scribner, editor of Scribner's Monthly, Turgenev sends a polite refusal to a solicitation of work to be published in the magazine. In part: "I never mean anything but a novel or a tale. Political articles are not in my line—and I could not at all fulfill the programme you propose me. It would be rather difficult for me to write even a novel now—as I have almost given up writing. However—I am willing to try and if I can draw anything from my exhausted stock, you will certainly have 'the primear' of it. But I can not engage me to any date— or give a title beforehand."
