Ingels was a troubled man, wrestling with alcoholism and a Catholic conscience. Despite his unrivaled talent for depicting nightmarish scenarios, he came to detest drawing horror comics, a situation which may have exacerbated his drinking problem. EC historian Bill Mason claimed that "Ingels was a Method actor of pen and brush, whose work reflected, as Feldstein has put it, 'his physical, psychological, emotional make-up.'"
