HAUNT OF FEAR No. 11 Author: Place: Publisher: Date: Description: EC (Indicia: "Fables Publishing Co., Inc."). January-February, 1952. Fair-Good (1.0). Several spine splits, the largest being 3". Cover just barely attached at bottom staple and likely to launch with little provocation. Tiny chip to top right corner of front cover, numerous signs of spine stress, including short transverse tears. Soft and pulpy, eerily redolent of the grave. Off-white to cream pages. Ownership rubberstamp to bottom margin of inside front cover and first page, effaced with black Sharpie. Graham Ingels cover. Scripts by Al Feldstein and Bill Gaines. Art by Graham Ingels Jack Kamen George Roussos and Jack Davis An old man shovels dirt over his wife in a creepy basement of horror. Ingels feathery inks and Marie Severin's earthy color palette create an understated but disturbing cover image. Bill Schelly said that Severin's first coloring job for EC was Two-Fisted Tales #26 (March-April, 1952), cover dated one full two-month release cycle behind Haunt #11, but this cover bears her fine touch and despite the earlier cover date, it is indisputably her handiwork. Asked about this apparent discrepancy, EC ace Thommy Burns explains that it's due to the out-of-synch cover dates that hampered Haunt on the newsstands: "The copyright registration on TFT 36 predates HOF 11 by two weeks (a direct result of the 1950 title/numbering change)." Burns also points out that the cover is signed "GHASTLY," marking the first time that Ingels signed a cover with his famous nom-de-gloom ("The Old Witch first referred to him as "Ghasty Graham Ingels" in Haunt #4 but he didn't sign that way for more than a year.") A limited edition of 100 softcover and 15 hardcover catalogues are available. Over 200 pages, fully illustrated. Fun reference, great keepsake. Softcovers $40, dust-jacketed hardcover with limitation plate $200. To order, contact ivan@pbagalleries.com or visit: https://www.pbagalleries.com/content/comics/. R. Crumb says, "I found [PBA's catalogue] so interesting that I am saving it for the texts that accompany the comics which were put up for auction. This is some of the best commentary I’ve yet seen on the quality of the content of comic books. I especially enjoyed the reviews of the post-war horror comics. Great. Priceless." Consignments welcome for PBA's Spring 2021 Comic Book sale. Pre-Code Horror, Golden Age and Silver Age comics, original art and ephemera sought. Send inquiries to ivan@pbagalleries.com.
