Engraved frontispiece with portrait of Fontenelle and 1 engraved plate. Contemporary red morocco by Staggemeier & Welcher, covers elaborately gilt in a neo-classical design, Greek-key border, onlaid in green morocco with gilt floral curls, centre onlaid with green morocco and tooled in gold to a mosaic design with dots and small flowers, flat spine richly gilt, gilt inner dentelles, blue silk liners, g.e. A FINE EXAMPLE OF A STAGGEMEIER & WELCHER BINDING. "[The binders] were German immigrants who were in partnership by 1799. They seem later to have separated; they are still mentioned in 1817" ( Foot , A Collection of Bookbindings, vol. 2, nos. 197 & 198).
