Beschreibung:

DIOGENES LAERTIUS. De vitis, dogmatibus Greek philosophy. DIOGENES LAERTIUS. De vitis, dogmatibus et apophthegmatibus clarorum philosophorum libri decem Graece et Latine. Lipsiae, impensis Ioannis Pauli Krausii bibliop. Viennens., 1759 8vo, 200x120 mm, full calf binding, gilt titles and ornaments on the spine, red edges. Ornaments on title page, text on two columns in Greek and Latin type. Uniform browning, good specimen.
The Lives and Doctrines of the Philosophers of the Greek author Diogenes Laertius, who probably lived in the first half of the 3rd century AD, is still "our best indirect source of knowledge for classical philosophy". The Lives include both a biographical and a doxographic narrative, fundamentally focused on Greek thinkers from the 6th to the 3rd century BC. (From Talete to Epicurus), even if references to schools and to people extend at least to the second century AD C. (The classical tradition, Cambridge Mass 2010, p.271) Diogenes Laertius drew his material from previous compilations and his typing report offers long extracts of primary texts not transmitted elsewhere, such as Epicurus' 'Main Doctrines' .
