SOLDIER TO TRAGEDIAN. A warm, effusive letter to the famous actor, associated with Edwin Booth, who befriended Custer in 1866. "Your beautiful token greeted me on my return...I accept it gratefully... and shall ever cherish it...in remembrance of the many delightful hours spent in the society of the donor. I shall look upon it as another link which strengthens the friendship begun years ago... under such peculiar circumstances which time I trust will only strengthen. We are, as it were but at the threshold of life...May each reunion strengthen the bond between us and may the warm fraternal feeling of our early manhood ripen into an affection as pure and devoted as that of Damon and Pythias. Whether together or separated always remember that in my heart you shall ever hold a place and should fortune throw you with me in the wild west, I offer you a soldier's welcome and that greatest proof of a soldier's confidence and esteem, a seat at my mess table and a share of my blanket..." For Barrett's account of their unlikely friendship see "Personal Recollections of General Custer" in F. Whittaker, A Complete Life of Gen. George Custer (New York, 1876).
