CUSTER, GEORGE ARMSTRONG, Major General. Autograph letter signed ("G Custer B[revet] Maj Gen") to Liffey & Co., "Headquarters 3d Div. Cav[alry], 5 January 1865. One page, an oblong (the upper portion of a 4to sheet), small clean tear at top central fold. [ with ] Carte-de-visite portrait photograph, n.d., without photographer's imprint, 102 x 64mm. (4 x 2 716 in.), slightly spotted, an unusual pose, Custer in full uniform, seated, with campaign hat in hand. "Please make to the order of Col [Smith Hugh] Hastings 5th Mich[igan] Cav[alry] one of the 'Custer Badges' and oblige...." Custer, who had commanded the 5th Michigan Cavalry since June of 1864, in action at Gettysburg and in Sheridan's Valley campaign, had been promoted to command the Third Division Cavalry Corps in October. Rather than leave his old regiment without a commander, Custer had recommended, in a letter of 9 December 1864 to Governor Blair that Major Hastings be promoted to Colonel and placed in command (Custer's letter was sold in these rooms, 5 December 1991, lot 30). After Hastings' promotion was approved, Custer, in the present letter, ordered on Hastings' behalf one of his personal regimental badges.
