CHURCHILL, Winston S. (1874-1965), Prime Minister of Great Britain , and Harry S. TRUMAN (1884-1972), President of the United States]. Printed book JOINTLY SIGNED: ("Harry S. Truman" as President, "Winston S. Churchill"). Charter of the United Nations and Statutes of the International Court of Justice. San Francisco: University of California Press, 1945. Folio, 340 x 255 mm. (13 1/4 x 10 in.). [2], 30pp., sewn in buff paper wrappers, upper cover printed in gold with United Nations emblem, trifling tear at base of spine, slight wrinkling to extreme edges of cover , otherwise in excellent condition for this fragile item. FIRST EDITION OF THE UNITED NATIONS CHARTER, SIGNED BY CHURCHILL AND PRESIDENT TRUMAN. Inside the front cover appears a printed notice "Printed from type used in the official copies." Boldly signed on the titlepage by Harry S. Truman (beneath the emblem) and Winston S. Churchill (beneath the imprint at the base of the page), each in blue fountain-pen. Truman's signature is a particularly large, clear example. VERY RARE: we have not traced another copy of the Charter signed by both leaders. The United Nations Conference, held in San Francisco (25 April-26 June 1945) was attended by 50 countries and put into final form initiatives taken at the Dumbarton Oaks Conference. Truman had become President by the date the Charter was approved (June 26) and attended the ceremony in which it was signed. Its first meeting was in October 1945.
