CAPTAIN JAMES COOK (1728-1779) AND CAPTAIN JAMES KING (1750-1784) [Third Voyage] A Voyage to the Pacific Ocean undertaken, by the command of his majesty, for making Discoveries in the Northern Hemisphere . London: H. Hughs for G. Nicol and T. Cadell, 1785. 3 volumes, 4 (30.4 x 23.4cm). 24 engraved maps and charts (14 folding), folding letterpress table in vol. 3. (Lacking atlas volume, some dampstaining, mostly marginal, some unobtrusive light browning and spotting.) Calf-backed boards (worn, losses to spines). Cook's important monograph of his third voyage in the Pacific was finished by Captain James King Having made, in effect, a running survey of the west coast of America as far as the Icy Cape, Cook turned the Resolution and the Discovery back to the Sandwich Islands. They anchored in Karakakao bay in Hawaii and there Cook met his death at the hands of disaffected natives on the 14th February 1779. Cook was succeded in turn by Captain Charles Clerke (1741-1779), who lasted only six months, and by Captain James King Second edition. Sabin 1626; Mitchell 1552. (3)
