Provenance : John Bacon Sawrey Morritt, Rokeby Park (1771-1843; bookplate); R.A. Morritt (sale Sotheby's, 13 Feb. 1961, lot 22). A FINE, ELEGANT SET OF COOK'S VOYAGES , the first and second voyage in first edition and the third voyage in second edition. 'Captain Cook's three great voyages form the basis for any collection of Pacific books. In three great voyages Cook did more to clarify the geographical knowledge of the southern hemisphere than all his predecessors together had done. He was the first really scientific navigator, and his voyages made great contributions to many fields of knowledge' (Hill). The early owner of this set, John Morritt, was a traveller, classical scholar, close friend of Sir Walter Scott and founding member of the Travellers Club. (10)
