Atlas vol.: 87 engraved plates. (Text with occasional light spotting, occasional browning and offsetting; atlas with browning and spotting, a few short tears). Contemporary calf rebacked preserving most of the original spines, atlas in 19th-century boards rebacked and re-cornered with recent calf (text vols. rubbed and scuffed, corners repaired; atlas hinges repaired). Provenance : Elizabeth Garnier (inscription in a 19th-century hand on the first title) -- James Howatson (inscription dated 1893 on front blank of atlas). FIRST EDITION, WITH A SECOND SUITE OF THE SMALLER PLATES BOUND INTO THE ATLAS VOLUME, of Cook's third voyage, which resulted in what Cook judged his most valuable discovery -- the Hawaiian Islands. The plates which are not marked with an asterisk on the list of plates (indicating that they should be folded and bound into the quarto text volumes), are here also present in duplicate in the atlas, the majority of them unfolded and retaining deckles on three sides.
