BYRON, George Gordon Noel, 6th Baron (1788-1824). Autograph letter signed to [Charles Robert] Cockerell, n.p. [Athens], 27 December 1810, on light blue paper, one page, 8vo , annotated in a different hand at the foot and on the verso, contemporary docket (integral leaf removed, a few light spots, right edge creased, lower left corner torn away with loss of 3 words, small tear in upper left corner, traces of tape). Byron writes while wintering in Greece on the grand tour. 'I am willing to pay the Barone his demand for certain drawings, viz. 1 of Athens, 1 of Cape Colonna, 2 of Constantinople, four of the Troad and two of any parts of the Bosphorus & Hellespont which may suit his taste'. With characteristic indifference to financial matters, he leaves to Cockerell 'The when, the where, the how, and the how much'. The endorsements, presumably by the recipient, record that 'the accord was for 300 piastres the drawing', and 'Received of L[or]d Byron April 20, 1811 to deliver to Lynk [sic] 300 piastres for the drawing of Sunion'. Byron's grand tour with Hobhouse included Athens, Smyrna, the Troad and Constantinople, and was the occasion of his swimming the Hellespont in May 1810. Charles Robert Cockerell (1788-1863), the architect, spent the winter of 1810-1811 in Athens where Byron enjoyed his companionship, and that of Cockerell's circle of continental friends, including Baron Karl Haller von Hallerstein, architect to the King of Bavaria, the Estonian Baron von Stackleburg and the Bavarian painter Jacob Linckh, from whom he commissioned drawings. They shared his interest in not only the ancient but also the modern Greeks and stimulated his enthusiasm for the cause of Greek independence.
