Beschreibung:

BRITISH ARCTIC EXPEDITION, 1875-1876 A W.T.Copeland & Sons oval drainer, printed and painted in blue with 'Arctic Expedition 1875' 'garter' within intertwined rope border to rims, Copeland Arctic Expedition marks, with, on base, impressed Copeland mark, 'Alert' neatly scatched on, with printed 'Discovery' mark scratched out. -- 36cm. long. Captain George S. Nares was recalled from the 'Challenger' expedition to head the expedition on the steam-ships 'Alert' and 'Discovery'. An attempt was clearly made to make life on board (at least for the officers) as civilised as possible given their probable position during the long winter: Copeland produced individual services for both vessels, each ship had their own headed embossed note-paper and Burton-on-Trent even supplied some specially bottled beer. This attention to detail is perhaps indicative of the importance that the government placed on the success of the expedition.
