BRITISH ARCTIC EXPEDITION, 1875-1876 Sir George Strong NARES (1831-1915) A 3pp. ALS on expedition embossed headed paper, "Alert" Portsmouth 4th May 1875 , small 8vo bifolium (180 x 113mm.), to an unnamed correspondant, "Dear Sir... Pray inform your brother how kind I think it of him for expressing his great interest in our work. He may depend upon it that whether we are successful or not the reapers wont forget the sowers. It is to him and the rest of our Arctic forefathers that any work we may accomplish will be due -- for without the experience gained for us by them we should be nowhere." [ With :] G.S.NARES. A 3pp. ALS, Edgar Road, Winchester 24th January 1875 , small 8vo bifolium (176 x 114mm.), to 'Commerell' (Admiral Sir John Commerell, 1829-1901), 'Rawson is appointed provided he can pass the Doctors, which there is little doubt about. The young fellows have not the most remote idea of the hardships they have volunteered to go through. It won't be our fault if we let any foreigners cut us off from the Pole, but it is a harder nut to crack than people think, & Rawlinson & others should not brag too much before hand.' (Light damage from adhesive on verso of second leaf). [ And :] six ephemeral printed items, all relating to the banquet held in honour of Captain Nares and the officers of the arctic expedition by the mayor and city of Portsmouth, Portland Hall, 20 May, 1875, comprising the invitation with original envelope, admission card, menu, place card, and programme of the after-dinner entertainments. Provenance : Councillor Arthur Cudlipp (mayor of Portsmouth in 1879). [ And :] Captain H.F.STEPHENSON (commanding H.M.S. Discovery ). Two ALS on expedition headed embossed paper, [May? 1875], one to Mr..., the other to Mrs. Fitzgerald, concerning difficulties over arrangements for the Fitzgeralds' visit to the Discovery . [ And :] an envelope with the embossed crest on rear flap; a manuscript postcard (dated 3 November 1876) with a report of the reception given to the returning 'Arctic heroes'; a large quantity of newpaper cuttings from The Graphic and Illustrated London News , November 1876, concerning the expedition and including numerous wood-engraved illustrations.
