BRITISH ARCTIC EXPEDITION 1875-76 A W.T.Copeland & Sons circular soup plate, printed and painted in blue with 'Arctic Expedition 1875' crest within intertwined rope border to rims, Copeland Arctic Expedition marks, with, on base, 'Alert'. -- 26cm. diameter. Captain George S. Nares was recalled from the 'Challenger' expedition to head the expedition on the steam-ships 'Alert' and 'Discovery'. Officers included Commander A.H.Markham; Lieut. P.Aldrich; Capt. H. Wemyss Fielden (all on the 'Alert') and Capt. H.F.Stepenson; Lieut. L.A.Beaumont (on the 'Discovery'). The expedition reached a higher latitude and wintered farther north than any ship had ever done before (82° 30' N). The results of the expedition were the discovery of 300 miles of Greenland and Ellesmere Island coast-line, the examination of part of the frozen polar ocean, a series of meteorological, magnetic and tidal observations at two points further north than any such observations had ever been taken before, and the gathering of large collections of geological and natural history specimens. Nares was awarded the R.G.S.'s Gold Medal in 1877 in recognition of the achievements of the expedition.
