Provenance : Colonel Daniel Sickles who was instrumental in the production of the book ( imprimé pour Le Colonel Daniel Sickles . inscribed by the author "Au Colonel Sickles, ce livre qu'il a construit avec amour, et dont la réussite, qui me semble totale, lui fait honneur, bien cordial souvenir de notre collaboration Montherlant 30 Avril 1960"). A UNIQUE SET. Limited edition of 280 copies, this number III of 20 copies "réservés aux collaborateurs et à des hommages". In an accompanying letter, addressed to Daniel Sickles and dated 28 September 1967, Charles Terrasse writes "cet exemplaire, l'un de deux que vous avez, m'a vivement intéressé par les calques que mon oncle Bonnard avait établis pour la mise en page." According to Antoine Terrasse, Bonnard was inspired to produce the 39 drawings by the tales of Léopold Chauveau. Montherlant was then, in turn inspired by Bonnard's designs to write La Rédemption (according to the uncorrected colophon leaf in the volume of author's proofs and designs). It is difficult to establish to what extent Bonnard was involved in the production of this work, Antoine terrasse comments: 'At the end of the book is the following note: "The lithos begun in 1928 by Pierre Bonnard were finished by Fernand Mourlot"'. According to the limitation leaf copies numbered 1-3 each contained original designs. Number 1 "comportant vingt dessins originaux"; number 2 "dix-sept dessins originaux inutilisés" and number 3 "deux dessins originaux, dont celui du frontispice". The present set of Bonnard drawings on tracing paper is not accounted for in the limitation statement. A.Terrasse. Pierre Bonnard Illustrator A Catalogue Raisonné. 40a; Strachan. The Artist and the Book in France p.56.
