BOCCACCIO, Giovanni (1313-1375). Laberinto d'amore . Florence: [Filippo Giunti], 1516. 8° (156 x 99mm). (A few woodcut initials crudely hand-coloured, a little scattered staining.) 19th-century calf-backed boards with vellum corners, gilt spine with citron label. A scarce edition of Boccaccio's Philocolo , this one with a comforting letter to Pino de Rossi. The Philocolo was his first work, written in about 1341, at the instigation of his beloved Fiammetta, in reality Maria, natural daughter of Robert d'Anjou, King of Naples. It relates in prose the romantic love and adventures of Florio and Biancafiore, a favourite subject with the knightly minstrels of France, Italy and Germany. '...it would be unjust to deny that the Filocopo is a highly interesting work, full of promise and all but articulate power', Encyclopaedia Britannica . Adams B-2179 (one copy only); not in BMC; Bacchi della Lega p.117.
