Although he is more at home in the world’s conflict zones, his most well-known image is probably the picture known as Fotbollsbalett from the World Cup finals in 1958. Playing for the Brazilian team, a seventeen-year old talent made his debut on the international football scene at the World Cup in Sweden. Pelé, as this football legend came to be known, was to dominate the game during years to come. During this final game between the hosts and the Brazilian team, however, a teammate of Pelé’s held the reins of the Seleção firmly in hand: Valdir Pereira, also known as Didi, the midfield mastermind of Rio’s club Botafogo, equally known for his elegant technique and his virtuosic free kicks. Engman’s composition provides the perfect frame for the Brazilian playmaker: while all around him, adversaries and teammates seem to be falling over their own feet, in the eye of the storm the great Didi stops the ball, as calmly as if he were taking a walk in the park – only to play a deadly pass the next moment. Brazil won the finals with 5 : 2 – the first of its five World Champion titles so far.
