Collection of early leaves, from illuminated and decorated manuscripts, in Latin, on vellum [Germany, twelfth to fourteenth century] 7 leaves and 4 fragments (including a bifolium), comprising: (a) leaf from an illuminated Ottonian missal, 200mm. by 163mm., with 20 lines in a fine early gothic script with a broken ct-ligature, initials, rubrics and instructions in crystalline gold, one interlinear revision, stained on reverse, early twentieth-century “No 6 Missale” at head, trimmed at edges from reuse in bookbinding (but no affect to text), overall good condition, Germany, twelfth century; (b) bifolium from a portable Choirbook, 370mm. by 230mm., with readings for the feasts of St. Afra and All Saints, text accompanied by music in neumes, double column, remains of 22 lines (with a line or so trimmed from base) in a rounded bookhand, initials and rubrics in red, 2 large initials (perhaps once iridescent red, and now oxidised or flaked away) with red and pale blue penwork, blue painted patch in gutter from reuse in binding (with slight affect to text) and substantial remains of paper adhering to reverse, Germany (perhaps Augsburg), twelfth century; (c) two horizontal strips cut from a Lectionary, each approximately 310mm. by 55mm. and with remains of 5 lines of text, one with a white-vine initial on yellow and green grounds with 2 lines of decorated capitals, 4 other simple red initials, Germany, twelfth century; (d) leaf from a glossed copy of Revelations 14:8-13, 230mm. by 190mm., main text in single column of 20 lines in spiky bookhand, within glosses in smaller script on either side (those on innermost side set within main body of text), initials in pale green, blue and red with contrasting penwork (and one terminating in tiny coloured flowers), painted section on verso from reuse in binding, probably Germany (perhaps Rhineland), thirteenth century; (e) 2 leaves from a Psalter, double column, 32 lines in a fine bookhand, small red initials, 8 large red initials (some with baubles mounted in their bodies), Germany, c.1220; (f) fragment of a leaf from a Lectionary, 180mm. by 170mm. (addressing “Fratres” and thus probably from a monastic book), wanting lines at base, 16 lines remaining, rubrics and small initials in red (one with a blue human face inside), two larger initials with green scalloping penwork, Germany, thirteenth century; plus another 2 leaves from manuscripts of thirteenth and early fourteenth century; all recovered from bindings and hence trimmed and defective in places with stains, folds and small holes
