Launched at the New York Motor Show in March 1959, the Austin-Healey 3000 retained the muscular good looks of its 100/6 predecessor while providing a useful increase in performance thanks to a larger-capacity version of the long-established C-Series engine. Bored to 2,912cc, the latter produced 124bhp; good enough for a top speed of 114mph with the optional hardtop in place. Otherwise, the car was much as before, although Girling front disc brakes were a welcome improvement. Introduced in 1961, the Mk.II in Convertible form delivered improved practicality courtesy of a fixed foldaway top and winding windows. From now until the end of production the only 3000 model available would be the 2+2, the less popular two-seat version having been dropped. The 3000 Mk.III with 148bhp engine appeared early in 1964, to be followed later in the year by the Phase II version with increased ground clearance - addressing a long-term criticism - and revised rear suspension incorporating twin radius arms instead of a Panhard rod. Top speed was now 121mph and the 0-60mph time dipped below 10 seconds. Despite the heritage of the basic design the big Healey remained as popular as ever, although increasingly stringent safety and emissions legislation meant that its days were numbered. By the time production ended in December 1967, the MKIII Phase II proved by far the most popular variant built. This superb Phase II has only had two owners from new; the vendor purchasing the car from the first owner over forty years ago in 1971 and subsequently keeping it in the highest of standards. Repainted a few years ago in the original colour of British Racing Green, 6926PE has retained the original black interior and both the original full length tonneau cover and hood bag are all in very good condition. A replacement engine was fitted in 1975 due to the original engine becoming lost after the garage looking after it went into liquidation. This Austin Healey 3000 Mk.III Phase II is supplied with a V5C registration document, a new MoT test certificate expiring in August 2013, the original buff log book confirming the first owner and when the vendor purchased the car, the original handbook, full length tonneau cover, a separate hood bag in order to still carry rear seat passengers when the roof is down, original tools and a large history file.
