WORLD WAR II -- [The Invasion of Europe: Operations 'Neptune', 'Husky', 'Avalanche' and 'Infatuate']. 23 July, 1943 - 21 October, 1944. c.870 sheets of typed orders, with integral charts, the vast majority broadsides (328 x 202mm). (Some rust marks from original staples or ties, 'Infatuate' orders in fragile condition.) 35 separate folding maps and traces, 6 photographic coastal profiles, 5 of these bound in contemporary buckram with original typed paper labels, 3 further coastal profiles as printed sketches, and 4 loose photographic images of the sea. (Some dust-soiling to printed folders and minor wear to printed orders, with very occasional salt water damage.) Provenance : contemporary pencil sketch of a sea creature to the upper wrapper of Gold Area - Naval Officer-In-Charge's Orders .

A FASCINATING ARCHIVE OF PRINTED MATERIAL RELATING TO THE ALLIED INVASION OF EUROPE DURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR, covering naval operations relating to the Normandy landings, the invasion of Sicily and of mainland Italy, and the Anglo-Canadian operation to secure the port of Antwerp. In addition, there are a number of orders relating to HMS Squid, the tank landing craft repair base at Southampton, in particular naval exercises 'Incarnate', 'Cackle' and 'Puddleduck'. Amongst the papers for Operation Avalanche is an original Communication Sheet signed by the Naval Officer in charge, taking Admiral Leonardi of the Italian navy into custody.
