Title: 13 issues of Negro College Quarterly of Wilberforce University during World War II Author: Place: Wilberforce, Ohio Publisher: Date: 1943-1947 Description: 13 issues of Negro College Quarterly. Volume I, No. 1 (March 1943), 2 (June 1943), 4 (Dec.1943); Vol. II, No. 1 (March 1944), 3 (Sept. 1944), 4 (Dec.1944); Vol. III, No. 2 (June 1945), 3 (Sept. 1945), 4 (Dec. 1945); Vol. IV, No. 1 (March 1946), 2 (June 1946), 4 (Dec. 1946); and Vol. V, No. 1 (March 1947). (8vo) pale blue wrappers printed in black. The lot also includes 5 issues of: The Journal of Negro Education: A Quarterly Review of Problems Incident to the Education of Negroes. Vol . II, No. 1 (Jan 1933); Vol . III, No. 2 (Apr 1934); Vol . X, No. 4 (Oct 1941); Vol . XII, No. 1 (Winter 1943); Vol . XXVIII , No. 4 (Fall 1959). Scarce original printings of what was probably the first journal of African-American higher education – published at the first historically Black college in America. Published during and after World War II (the final issue was June 1947), the Negro College Quarterly differed from the older and more general Journal of Negro Education by publishing essays of specific interest to educators at historically Black colleges, including how these colleges progressed in wartime; teaching courses for Black students on economics, advanced technical training and dramatic stagecraft; social issues such as the contribution of Black musicians to inter-racial relations and the educational future of Negro war veterans. Very uncommon in these original printings; most institutions hold only microfilm or 1970s reprints. Lot Amendments Condition: Faint yellowing to wrapper edges, most with a rubber-stamp from college library; very good. Item number: 251017
