WESLEY, John, Founder of Methodism . Autograph letter signed ("JWesley") to Mr. Barker at Little Leigh, Rochdale, 17 April 1776. 1 full page, 4to, integral address leaf in Wesley's hand. "YOU ARE OBLIGED IN HONOUR, IN CONSCIENCE, & IN EQUITY." A very characteristic letter in which Wesley intervenes in hopes of settling a financial dispute among Wesley's brethren: "I wrote, as promised, to Matthias Mayer, & since then I talked to him. He said, 1. In order to put John Hampson into business at first, you engaged for a thousand pounds. 2. The partners launched out so far, that they were under a necessity of having more money. 3. They applied to Mr. Mayer, who advanced a thousand pounds and upwards in all 1349 pounds. 4. The partnership stopped & must have broke, but that Mr. Barker agreed to stand to half the deficiency, and Matt. Mayer the other half...On this M. Mayer took the whole affair on himself & charged himself with all the debts. If this was the case, I was deceived, not you, when I was last at your house. For your paying a thousand lbs. was nothing to the purpose: You was obliged to this any way. But what you promised in my hearing was, To pay half ye deficiency. And on this condition M. Mayer took the whole affair on himself. If I speak freely I really think, you are obliged in honour, in conscience, and in equity to do what you promised."
