Those figure birds, snakes, insects, plants, corals, etc., and are accompanied with descriptive texts in Latin and English giving the generic and specific characters and informations about the habitats and sometimes on their habits. The English botanist and zoologist Shaw (1751-1813) was a medical practitioner before being named assistant lecturer in botany at Oxford University. He twas the co-founder of the Linnean Society of London in 1788 and became assistant keeper of the Natural history department at the British Museum.
