UNITED STATES V. VIRGINIA (1996): THE VMI CASE.2 titles on the landmark Virginia Military Institute case, both inscribed by the author to Ruth Bader Ginsburg: 1. STRUM, PHILIPPA. Women in the Barracks: The VMI Case and Equal Rights. Lawrence, KS: University Press of Kansas, 2002. Hardcover, dust jacket. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED: "For Ruth Bader Ginsburg, With gratitude for the work you put into this volume, & for the many ways in which you made my own work both easier & better." 2. BRODIE, LAURA FAIRCHILD. Breaking Out: VMI and the Coming of Women. New York: Pantheon Books, 2000. Hardcover, dust jacket. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED: "For Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and all of her staff, With admiration and well wishes, Laura Brodie." WITH: Another copy as above, also inscribed by the author to Ruth Bader Ginsburg. The United States brought suit against the Virginia Military Institute alleging its male-only admissions policy was unconstitutional and violated the 14th amendment's equal protection clause. The case was argued before the Supreme Court in January of 1996, and in June of that year, the court ruled 7-1 that the policy was unconstitutional, that the single-sex education did not contribute to education diversity, and that the alternative provided for female students did not offer the same benefits as VMI. Ginsburg authored the majority opinion which remains one of the most significant of her career on the court.
