UNITED STATES. The Articles of Confederation; The Declaration of Rights; The Constitution of this Commonwealth, and the Articles of the Definitive Treaty Between Great-Britain and the United States of America. Richmond, [Virginia]: Dixon and Holt, 1784. 8 o (191 x 120 mm). 23 pages. (Minor spotting to title, last leaf slightly shaved along fore-margin.) Disbound; half burgundy morocco gilt slipcase. THE RICHMOND PRINTING OF THE ARTICLES OF CONFEDERATION, VIRGINIA'S CONSTITUTION AND THE 1776 VIRGINIA DECLARATION OF RIGHTS An important Richmond imprint, containing four fundamental documents: the Articles of Confederation and Perpetual Union (pp. 1-11); the 1776 Virginia Declaration of Rights (pp. 12-14, largely the work of George Mason; the model for Jefferson's draft of the Declaration of Independence, several state constitutions and the French Declaration of the Rights of Man); the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Virginia (pp. 15-20, drafted 1776); and the Definitive Treaty between the United States and Great Britain (pp. 21-23, signed 1783, ending the war and making full acknowledgment of American independence). It is likely that this compendium was intended for use by members of the Virginia legislature, whose seat had recently moved from Williamsburgh, the old colonial capital, to Richmond. Evans 18818.
