Beschreibung:

TWO HISTORIATED INITIALS OF THE ASCENSION, cut from choirbooks, ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM a) [Bologna, 13th century] 147 x 150mm. An initial 'V' with staves of pink with monochrome modelling and a foliate terminal of pink, blue and orange leaves against a blue background, within the initial standing figures of the Virgin and Apostles, some indicating the small half-length figure of Christ ascending in the sky above, on the verso two four-line staves in red with music of a square notation and a line of text written in black ink in a gothic bookhand (small pigment losses and rubbing in the area around Christ). Mounted. with b) [Perugia, early 14th century] 94 x 92mm. An initial of pink staves set against a blue ground, painted over a four-line stave of red containing a half-length figure of Christ in a blue mandorla supported by four flying angels above a group of five watching Apostles, all with burnished gold haloes with black borders dotted white and painted in shades of blue, grey, pink and orange (some wear to surface). Mounted. With its delicate colouring and modelling this initial typifies the elegant style of illumination prevalent in Perugia in the first half of the 14th century. Both initials are likely to have come from Graduals where they would have opened the introit 'Viri galilei quid admiramini...' for Mass on Ascension Sunday. (2)
