THREE HISTORIATED INITIALS, on two leaves from a Bible with the Prologues attributed to St Jerome, in Latin, ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM [Paris, c.1250] 195 x 140 mm. 37 lines written in a gothic bookhand in brown ink in two columns between two verticals and above 37 horizontals ruled in brown, justification: 122 x 48-9-47mm, rubrics in red, one-line initials alternately red and blue, two-line initials alternately in blue flourished with red or in red flourished with blue, THREE HISTORIATED INITIALS EXTENDING INTO BAR BORDERS WITH DRAGONS in pink, blue, orange and burnished gold, two with staves of pink or blue on grounds of the contrasting colour, one as a tabernacle in pink, green and blue (text on verso of one leaf neatly cancelled, leaving the two historiated initials untouched, trimmed into headings, wear to margins). Loose in mounts. The leaves come from a fine example of the single-volume Bibles which were such a feature of Parisian production in the 13th century. The illumination is in the style of the Du Prat atelier, named by Branner after the Bible owned by the Cardinal (Boston, Public Lib. Ms 1532). The typically large-headed figures have the taller proportions and flatter drapery of the atelier's middle period: R. Branner, Manuscript Painting in Paris during the Reign of St Louis , 1977, pp.78-80. The historiated initial D of the seated David, holding a book and pointing at his eyes beneath the head of God, opens Psalm 26, Dominus illumination mea , the Lord is my light. The leaf opens in verse 21 of Psalm 21, ending with verse 6 of Psalm 26. The second leaf carries the end of the Psalter, opening in verse 17 of Psalm 147, and continues with the Prologue to Proverbs, marked with an historiated I showing King Solomon in prayer and the main text begins with an initial P of Solomon instructing a youth with the teacher's usual symbol of a birch. Provenance: Reportedly from a manuscript from the Library of Raglan Castle, built by the Herbert family in the 15th century and largely destroyed in 1646. (2)
