To modernise the Triumph TR5 that had evolved from the Michelotti designed TR4, Triumph looked to produce a new modern body. They initially turned to Michelotti, the designer of the original TR4 but the Italian was fully committed with other projects. Instead, Triumph commissioned Karmann of Germany. The task was difficult as Karmann had to produce a new body style whilst retaining much of the original structure. The restyle included a new nose, wings and a new tail. The result was the 'Kamm' tailed TR6, and was produced between 1969 and 1976. The Triumph TR6 became the best selling Triumph at the time with 94,619 units sold. The TR6 featured the inline six cylinder engines from the TR5 and in the US the engine was fuelled by carburettors, whilst cars supplied around the rest of the world, including the UK, were fuel injected. The home market TR6 initially produced 150bhp but was later detuned to 125bhp. Due to their greater power output, the early models are sought after amongst the Triumph enthusiasts. This 1973 Triumph TR6 was purchased from the previous owner who had owned it for thirty three years. While in his ownership the engine was rebuilt in the late 1980's and in 1990 the car was put into his garage where it remained until the summer of last year when it was purchased by the vendor. After 23 years of storage this TR6 is completely rust free but did require re-commissioning so he replaced the water pump, battery and oil, filled the car with petrol and the Triumph started. The car was then serviced and a 12 month MoT was sought. Since then the vendor has had fitted new tyres, a new stainless steel exhaust system, re-conditioned fuel injection metering system, converted the fuel pump to a Bosch type and had the radiator flushed and cleaned. He removed and cleaned the petrol tank and replaced the petrol gauge sender unit along with replacing a number of seals and gaskets. This Triumph TR6 finished in the original blue that it came out of the factory has the original TR decals on the rear wings; the black seats have been re-foamed and are in very good condition. The car is supplied with a factory hard top, a V5C registration document, an MoT test certificate which expires in January 2015, invoices and some photographs taken when the car was recovered from the storage garage. The registration number TRC13 is the original number and remains with the car.
