THOMAS À KEMPIS (ca 1380-1471). Imitatio Christi . - Johannes GERSON (1363-1429). De meditatione cordis . Venice: Petrus de Quarengiis, Bergomensis and Giovanni Maria di Occimiano, 23rd April 1493. 8 o (154 x 106 mm). Collation : a-l 8 . 88 leaves. 35 lines and head-line, double column. Gothic type 2:68. Capital spaces with printed guide-letters. One woodcut initial on a4. Initials supplied in red, capital strokes in yellow. (A few insignificant pale stains, otherwise fine.) Modern plum hard-grained morocco, edges gilt (spine lightly toned). Provenance : extensive notes in a contemporary hand on a1r and l8r/v blanks discussing purgatory, repentance (from Pope Gregory) and baptism -- Estelle Doheny (morocco bookplate; purchased from Dawson's Bookshop, Los Angeles, 1 November 1943) -- donated to SMS November 1943. The wording of the colophon derives from Benalius's 1488 edition; like many other incunable editions (see also lot 129) this is erroneously attributed to Johannes Gerson.
