THOMAS A KEMPIS (ca.1380-1471). Hortulus rosarum . -- HUGO DE SANCTO VICTORE (d.1142). De studio orandi et De tribus dietis . Basel: Johann Bergmann de Olpe, 1499. Chancery 8° (148 x 103mm). Collation: a-p 8 (a1 title, verses by Sebastian Brant a2 headings, a3 text, h5r preface by Hugo de Sancto Victore, h6r text by Hugo, p4v laudes on the BVM derived from Apuleius and St. Bernard by S. Brant, p7-8 blank). 120 leaves. 18-19 lines. Type: 1:109 a R, 4:220G. 3-4-line initial spaces, most with printed guide-letter. (Small wormhole touching a few letters in first leaves, repaired in the first, loss of an occasional letter on a few lvs. due to adhesion, very light, occasional spotting.) 20th-century brown morocco panelled in gilt and blind with central gilt ornament, by F. Bedford, gilt and gauffered edges. Provenance : Seminarii Carolini... (inscription washed from title). Second edition of these devotional aids, here joined by verses and prayers by the Basel humanist Sebastian Brant Much of Bergmann's printing stemmed from that humanist circle, of which he too was a member.
