(Newspapers – California Gold Rush, Hawaii, etc.) The Klaus Werner collection of newspapers relating to the California Gold Rush, Hawaii, and the exploration and expansion into the western territories of the United States Place Published: Various places Date Published: c.1800-1860 Description: Over 1,100 newspapers. Daily & weekly. Various sizes. A few previous bound and now disbound, most never bound and as issued. Housed in 12 modern custom-made quarter morocco & cloth drop-back boxes. 11 of the boxes measure 61x43x8.5 cm (24x17¼x3½”); one measures 72x64x11 cm (28½x25¼x4¼”). Ten of the smaller boxes with spines lettered in gilt: “Sandwich Islands & Gold Rush Newspaper Articles 1800-1860”; one is lettered “Gold Rush Newspaper Articles 1848-1860”; the large box has no lettering on the spine. Important collection of newspapers selected by and for the late collector and scholar Klaus Werner, whose passion was the study of events relating to the exploration of the Transmississippi West. The newspapers here gathered are not a random sampling of periodicals of the era but were primarily selected for specific articles covering the great drama of the age, the discovery of gold in California and the massive movement westward by those anxious to acquire it. There are some covering the settlement of missionaries and others on the Sandwich Islands – Hawaii – and some containing significant information on earlier explorations, such as those of Zebulon Montgomery Pike. Formed over several decades, the collection is a treasure chest of source material on the great events of the first half of the 19th century. Handsomely presented in custom-made cases. A sampling newspaper names present in in the collection: National Intelligencer; Lehigh Register; Baton Rouge Weekly Comet; Evansville, Indiana Weekly Journal; The Yankee Blade (Boston); Boston Recorder; Niles Weekly Register; Newark Daily Advertiser; New York Freeman’s Journal; New York Daily Tribune; Daily Herald; Boston Daily Journal; Bangor Courier; New York Weekly Tribune; Lowell Daily Journal & Courier; The Odd Fellow; New York Observer; Portland Transcript; Woodstock Mercury; [Albany] Weekly Argus; Vermont Watchman & State Journal; Gazette of the Union; The Vermont Chronicle; California Daily Courier; Mohawk Courier; Boston Recorder; Albany Freeholder; San Francisco Daily Herald; The Republic; Hanover Spectator; Boston Weekly Journal; Portland Transcript; Bangor Daily Mercury; Vermont Patriot; Burlington Free Press; Connecticut Courant (1803, with article on Louisiana); Vermont Watchman & State Journal (with T.
