In Holland; ofte omstandelyke beschryving van alles, het welke op des zelfs komste en geduurende Zyn verblyf, in 's Graavenhaage en elders, ten teeken van vreugde en eere, is opgerecht en voorgevallen . Allegorical frontispiece and 14 etched plates by ROMEYN DE HOOGHE (1645-1708), 11 OF WHICH ARE ON FULL SHEETS AND 3 ON HALF SHEETS, AND A PORTRAIT OF THE KING BY PIETER VAN GUNST AFTER JOHN BRANDON, ALL RICHLY COLORED AND MOST HEIGHTENED WITH GOLD BY A CONTEMPORARY HAND. Woodcut title-vignette and initials also colored. (Small tear in I2, short split in center fold of one plate.) Contemporary blind-blocked, tooled and paneled vellum over pasteboard (ties gone, joints beginning to split). Provenance : early price inscription; Lathrop Harper (sold to Gourary 1966). FIRST EDITION of one of the finest Dutch fête books of the Baroque period. It celebrates the joyous entry into The Hague of Stadtholder William III as King of Great Britain. Romeyn de Hooghe's etchings, all in FIRST STATE, are found colored in only very few copies. They show the procession, the triumphal arches, the Vyverberg and Binnenhof much as they appear today, the specially mounted decorations including painting and sculpture, and a spectacular display of fireworks.
