THE EX LORD LONSDALE- 1913 COMMER OMNIBUS/SHOOTING BRAKE REGISTRATION NO. BM 2856 CHASSIS NO. WP3, 290 RED WITH BLACK VINYL INTERIOR ENGINE: FOUR CYLINDER, SIDE VALVE, 24.8HP, CHAIN DRIVE; GEARBOX: THREE SPEED MANUAL; BRAKES: TRANSMISSION AND REAR WHEEL DRUM; SUSPENSION: SEMI-ELLIPTIC. RIGHT HAND DRIVE. THE COMMERCIAL CAR COMPANY LTD STARTED PRODUCTION IN 1906 IN BEDFORDSHIRE, THEN THE COMPANY WAS TAKEN OVER BY THE OLD ROOTES GROUP. THIS VEHICLE WAS ORIGINALLY ORDERED BY THE FIFTH LORD LONSDALE OF LOWTHER CASTLE NR PENRITH AND WAS BUILT TO HIS SPECIFICATIONS AS AN ESTATE-BUS-CUM-SHOOTING BRAKE. THE ORIGINAL LOG BOOK CALLS THE VEHICLE A CHARABANC WHICH ALSO CORRECTLY DESCRIBES THE BODY STYLE WHICH IS A SEPERATE DOOR FOR EACH ROW OF SEATS AND OPEN SIDES WITH CURTAINS. THIS VEHICLE WAS LATER NAMED THE "YELLOW PERIL" SINCE ALL OF LORD LONSDALES VEHICLES WERE YELLOW, AS WAS HIS SERVANTS LIVERY ! IT WAS USED TO GO FROM THE HOUSE TO THE LOCAL STATION TO COLLECT THE SHOOTING PARTY AND ALSO WAS THOUGHT TO HAVE SEEN REGULAR USE ON THE MOORS AROUND LOWTHER CASTLE. IN 1956 GERALD BRAGG ESQ., THE SALES DIRECTOR OF COMMER CARS LTD., LUTON WENT TO OAKHAM IN RUTLANDSHIRE AND NEGOTIATED THE PURCHASE OF THE MACHINE BACK TO THE COMPANY. FOLLOWING A COMPLETE OVERHAUL THE OMNIBUS WAS USED EXTENSIVELY FOR RALLIES AND CHARITY EVENTS. IN 1970 IT WAS AUCTIONED BY BRITSH CAR AUCTIONS AT MEASHAM AND PURCHASED BY THE CURRENT OWNERS WHO FITTED TWO NEW CHAINS, REPLACED A QUANTITY OF ROTTEN WOODWORK AND REPAINTED THE CAR IN ITS CURRENT LIVERY OF RED WITH GOLD LEAF LINING. THE VEHICLE HAS SEEN REGULAR USE IN RECENT YEARS AND WAS LAST TAXED IN 1993. THIS SPLENDID VEHICLE WAS DESIGNED TO SEAT 16 PEOPLE, INCLUDING THE DRIVER AND ONE PASSENGER WHO SAT BESIDE THE DRIVER. THE GEARBOX IS A "COMMER" CAR PATENT TYPE AND CHANGES IN A FORM OF PRESELECTOR. ON THE DASHBOARD THERE IS A BRASS PLATE WITH DRIVER'S INSTRUCTIONS. THE TYRES ARE OF THE SOLID TYPE AND IT IS ADVISABLE TO STORE THE CAR UP ON BLOCKS TO AVOID FLAT SPOTS. REPUTEDLY A ROOTES DRIVER EXCEEDED 30 MPH WITH THE VEHICLE ON A PRIVATE ROAD ALTHOUGH FOR COMFORT (ESPECIALLY FOR THE DRIVER!) SPEEDS SHOULD BE KEPT MUCH LOWER AND MORE SEDATE AND THE MANUFACTURER QUOTES A CRUISING SPEED OF JUST 12MPH AT 850RPM IN TOP GEAR. THE ENGINE IS SAID TO RUN VERY WELL WITH LOTS OF LOW SPEED TORQUE AND IT IS THOUGHT THE MAXIMUM RPM WAS ABOUT 1,500. EQUIPMENT INCLUDES ROTAX OIL HEADLAMPS, LUCAS KING OF THE ROAD SIDE LAMPS AND WOODEN ARTILLERY WHEELS. ACCOMPANYING THE SHOOTING BRAKE ARE SOME ORIGINAL SPECIFICATIONS, OLD AND NEW STYLE LOG BOOKS, SEVERAL OLD MOT CERTIFICATES, CORRESPONDANCE FROM GERALD BRAGG AND A ROAD TEST ARTICLE WRITTEN IN DECEMBER 1968. THE CAR IS DATED BY THE VETERAN CAR CLUB, CERTIFICATE NUMBER 1231 AND WOULD BE HIGHLY SUITABLE FOR NUMEROUS VETERAN RALLIES.
