These over-the-top gore-fests hint at the tawdry turn pre-Code horror comics might have taken if not for the Comics Code clampdown. "By mid-1968, when Weird's sales had been good enough to warrant a sister title (Tales from the Crypt, which became Tales of Voodoo after one issue, for obvious reasons), the blood-gates really opened and Eerie Publications hit their stride. Beheadings, acid baths, dismemberment and white bones poking through tender pink flesh: these were the comics that launched a million nightmares and just as many lunches." — Mike Howlett, "The Good, The Bad, And The Eerie!," The Worst of Eerie Publications.
