TALES FROM THE CRYPT No. 46 Publisher: EC [Indicia: I.C. Publishing Co., Inc.] Date Published: February-March, 1955 Description: Good- (1.8). Superficially nice-looking copy, but with a 2¾" split to bottom spine, a 2" split to top spine, cover loose at bottom staple and nearly detached at top staple, spine stress, a few very short edge tears, and chips to the back cover at the bottom spine and bottom edge. Cream to off-white pages. Deep, rich cover colors. Cover: Jack Davis. Plots and scripts: Bill Gaines, Al Feldstein, Carl Wessler. Art: Jack Davis, Joe Orlando, George Evans, Graham Ingels. GPAnalysis: A 1.8 sold for $375 in 12/22. The final ish of Tales from the Crypt was meant to be a rebirth rather than a swan song. The cover and contents were originally intended for a fourth EC horror mag to be titled Crypt of Terror. A house ad promoting Davis's werewolf cover under the Crypt of Terror title ran, paradoxically, in this very mag. The fact that Bill Gaines and Al Feldstein were planning a fourth horror title when the end was so near shows just how badly they misjudged the power of the anti-horror comics forces. "Crypt of Terror was announced but never issued due to the ongoing outcry against horror comics. The material appeared here as the final issue of Tales from the Crypt." — Grant Geissman, Tales of Terror! The EC Companion. Fantagraphics: 2000, p. 122. Enjoying the Sale?
