The Autobiography of Sir Henry Morton Stanley... edited by his wife, Dorothy Stanley London: William Clowes & Sons, Ltd. for Sampson Low, Marston & Co. Ltd., 1909. 8vo (265 x 180 mm). Photogravure portrait of Stanley and 15 photogravure plates, each with captioned tissue guards, folding map of Africa, and the facsimile reproduction of a letter sent by the young Stanley (John Rowlands) in 1858, and used as evidence for his parentage. Publisher's green crushed morocco gilt, upper cover with gilt device of Africa lettered Bula-Matari, spine lettered in gilt, top edge gilt, others uncut, extremities slightly rubbed, custom green drop flap cloth box, with morocco label titled in gilt. Provenance: Chisholm (book plate). A FINE COPY OF THE DELUXE EDITION OF STANLEY'S AUTOBIOGRAPHY, number 9 of 250 copies signed by Dorothy Stanley After Stanley's death in 1904, his wife Dorothy set about getting his autobiography finalized from Stanley's notes and drafts, and then published in London and in Boston in 1909. But his wife found additional material in their Surrey country house, in 1909, and a new de-luxe limited edition of the Autobiography was issued in 1910 in 250 copies, most given out to friends of the great explorer. It included the facsimile letter which Dorothy found, which had been unknown to Stanley during his lifetime, and proved that he had been born and raised in North Wales.
