ST HELENA - SAINSON, Louis Auguste de (1801-1887). 'Sommet de Green Mountain (Ascension)' and 'Ravins Volcaniques et montagne de cendre (Ile de l'Ascension)', 2 hand-coloured lithographs after de Sainson, 356 x 535mm., extracted from Dumont d'Urville's Voyage de la Corvette l'Astrolabe (Paris, 1830-1835); together with an engraved view of St. Helena published by Alexander Hogg, London, c. 1799. Jan Huygen van LINSCHOTEN (1563-1611). 'Vera effigies et delineatio Insula Sancae Helenae'. Amsterdam: [1600 or later]. Hand-coloured engraved map, 340 x 480mm. (Cropped, repairs on verso.); together with an engraved map of the island by R.H. Laurie, London, 1842. A Relation of the re-taking of the Island of St. Helena and three Dutch East-India Ships . London: Thomas Newcomb, 1673. 2° (290 x 186mm). 4p. (A little soiled and affected by damp.) Disbound. ONLY ISSUE OF THIS SCARCE PAMPHLET. The Dutch had captured the island at the end of 1672; it was recaptured by the English under Captain Richard Munden the following May. Munden sailed home with three Dutch ships as prizes, and was knighted by Charles II as a reward for his services. Wing R 865. F., R. von. Die Insel St. Helena . Vienna: Georg Helzinger, 1815. 12° (162 x 89mm). 15, [1]p., folding engraved frontispiece. (Spotted.) Contemporary yellow wrappers; together with a printed extract headed 'Observations for proving the Going of Mr. Ellicott's Clock, at St. Helena, by Mr. Charles Mason' [1762]; a collection of 19 London newspapers, comprising The London Chronicle (2 issues), The News (12 issues), The Weekly Intelligence (4 issues), and John Bull (one issue), dated 1794-1826, containing news of the island, most importantly during Napoleon's period of residence; 5 official proclamations relating to St. Helena, dated 1842-1900, printed as handbills; 'Island St. Helena Port & Quarantine Regulations,' printed handbill on blue paper, c. 1860; three small photographs of Smorenberg who escaped from the island in December, 1901; and a telegram from the Governor to the Secretary of State for the Colonies on the Death of Edward VII, 7 May [1910], issued as a handbill; the lot sold not subject to return.
