Archive relating to Major/Capt. Hugh T. Sime, 11th US Volunteer Cavalry. Sime served in the California National Guard ca 1880s-1900s and with the 11th Cavalry in the Philippines during the Spanish American War, and remained in the Philippines for some time after. Lot includes 23 medals, insignia, and other items, and 20+ letters and documents relating to his time in the Philippines. H.T. Sine(sic), 2nd Art'y; California National Guard medal with ten bars for the years 1887-1897 (except 1892), 8 of which are for achieving "Rifleman" status, one "Sharpshooter," and one "Distinguished Marksman," the last stamped 14k gold; California National Guard Veteran medal, stamped sterling silver; Spanish-American War Veterans collar button; Two Army Corp of Engineers pinbacks; Two 11th Cavalry crossed sabres pinbacks; one crossed sabres pinback; Two shield-shaped pinbacks featuring a version of the California State Seal; E Pluribus Unum shield eagle pinback; Two simple shield eagle pinbacks; One small oak leaf pinback; One shield eagle uniform button with "C" for Cavalry, made by Adolfo Roensch, Manila; One small cavalry uniform button made by Lilley, Columbus, OH; One small uniform button with the Spanish coat of arms, by J. Feu, Barcelona; One tiny gavel pinback; Two small NFBPWC pinbacks, marked gold filled; 1914 San Francisco Junior Exposition medal. 20+ letters and documents, including: Two TLsS from US Senator and former Gov. of California George C. Perkins (1839-1923), on US Senate letterhead, dated San Francisco, Sept. 17, 1900, and Washington, Dec. 30, 1901, and responding to a request from Sime regarding promotions and appointments in the regular army; TLS forwarded to Sime and signed by US Representative Julius Kahn (1861-1924) regarding a commission. ALS from Gen. Thomas M. Anderson (1836-1917), dated at Philadelphia, Aug 21, 1900, regarding a recommendation for Sime and asking about the current situation of the resistance in the Philippines; TLS on War Department/US Philippine Commission letterhead, dated at Manila, Oct. 19, 1900, signed by member of the Philippine Commission Bernard Moses, regarding Sime's request to organize a local militia; Typed document addressed to William Howard Taft and other members of the Philippine Commission, dated at Manila, June 25, 1901, signed by over 20 men endorsing Sime for Chief or Commissioner of Police in the Philippines; Typed document addressed to the Civil Governor and US Civil Commission of the Philippine Islands, dated at Manila, July 16, 1901, signed by 25+ Philippine businessmen endorsing Sime for Chief of the Insular Constabulary; LS, June 15, 1899 addressed Sime, written in Spanish, signed by Porfirio Escamilla, acting provincial secretary, and others; Letter from H.T.
