London: Printed by Tho[mas] Cotes, for Iohn Smethwick 1632. Folio, 319 x 216mm. (12 9/16 x 8 1/2 in.), red crushed morocco, covers tooled in gilt and blind to a panel design, central gilt arabesque cartouche, spine gilt in six compartments, turn-ins gilt, g.e., by L. Broca, slight wear to head and tail of spine, joints and corners, inner hinges cracked, front free endpapers detached, half morocco folding box (broken), "To the Reader" leaf and title-leaf darkened and with small marginal tears, last leaf discolored from excessive washing, repaired 4- and 2-inch tears to fols. 3a2 and 3d3 respectively, A5 with small tear to gutter, filled hole to 3a6 catching 2 letters, repaired marginal tear to v3 and v4 just entering text block of v4, 7 leaves with small rust holes catching a few letters, a few minor marginal repairs, washed and pressed, scattered residual minor staining and marginal soiling . SECOND FOLIO EDITION, first issue, imprint in Todd's state Ic, the page with Milton's "Effigies" verse (A5r, i.e., the inner forme of the same sheet) in Todd's state Ic2, title with engraved portrait by Martin Droeshout (third state), woodcut initials and head-pieces. Greg III, 113-1116; Pforzheimer 906; STC 22274; William B. Todd, "The Issues and States of the Second Folio and Milton's Epitaph", Studies in Bibliography 5 (1953): 81-108. Provenance : One or two nineteenth-centry annotations; note by the binder in upper margin of fol. *2 -- Reginald Arthur Tatton, armorial bookplate -- Jerome Kern, bookplate (from Bernard Quaritch, Ltd.), (sale, Anderson Galleries, New York, 21-24 January 1929, lot 1051). With : TLS from B. Ferguson, Managing Director of Quaritch, to Mitchell Kennerley of Anderson Galleries, 18 January 1929 ( one page, 4to ), affirming the authenticity of the last leaf. Mr Ferguson stands by his original assessment: "Although I did not myself collate the book... I do remember looking at this leaf and coming to the conclusion that it was undoubtedly genuine. Possibly it attracted my attention because as you say it is of different appearance from the other leaves in the book and must have been washed, but I do know that I examined the leaf carefully and came to this definite conclusion"). A pencil inscription on the front free endpaper states that the copy was "Warranted perfect by Quaritch".
