Folio (310 x 230 mm). xxxix, [10], 514, [14]; 600, [17]; 563, [23]; [508], [17]; 552, [19]; 547, [27], [2], [30] pp. General title dated 1771, volume titles dated 1770. Engraved plates of the Chandos portrait, Stratford bust, and Westminster monument, and 36 plates (1 for each play) engraved by H. Gravelot after F. Hayman. Period mottled calf, spines elaborately gilt, morocco spine labels, marbled endpapers. Old dampstaining to a few leaves in first volume, plates slightly toned, pencil annotations to a few plays, covers starting, some wear at corners. Provenance: Joshua Smith (armorial bookplates); John Shepard Eels Jr. (armorial bookplates). Second Hanmer edition. "This reprint of Hanmer on excellent paper [is] perhaps the best-produced Shakespeare edition of the 18th century" (Franklin Shakespeare Domesticated p 31). Volume 1 contains the prefaces of Hanmer and Pope, a biographical account by Rowe, and Ben Johnson's poem. Various readings of Theobald and Capel at end of each volume, glossary with errata in volume 6.
