(Science, Botanique) - Tractatus de virtutibus herbarum. Vicence [ Vicenza], Leonardus [Achates] de Basilea & Guilielmus de Papia, 27 oct. 1491. Small in-4° : [151 (on 172)] ff., sign. a-s8 t7 (incomplete : 4 first lvs unsigned (but title in facsimile) and lvs t8, u-x8 missing, some lvs restored in the margins with little lacks of text on the leaf of table, numerous old marg. notes in brown ink, some underlinings, notes and highlights to figures XCIX, CXXVII, CXLIII in red ink from another hand). 20th century pastiche binding : brown calf blind decorated, double fillets frame and cross brace design on the boards, ribbed spine with fillets, red sprinkled edges (leather very slightly rubbed). RARE FIRST KNOWN ITALIAN EDITION, printed by Achates (Basel 1472-1491), first printer of Vicenza, illustrated with 150 half-page woodcuts of plants. One of the numerous editions under the names of the illustrious physicians Arnaldus de Villa Nova (1235-1311) and Avicenna (980-1037), this "herbarius" is actually an anonymous compilation of classical, arabic and medieval sources (# Giralt). "Text and arrangement identical with Schoeffer's edition, but of course without German names of plants. The woodcuts are partly influenced by the German cuts, but all are newly designed, being finer in execution and the lines more delicate, and for the greater part quite different" (# Klebs). # Goff H-68; # Pritzel 10755; # Nissen 2308; # Hain 8451; BMC VII-1033; # Wellcome I-3100; # Klebs.- Early Herbals, n° 10; # S.H.
