(2 small, marginal adhesive-marks.) Original vellum-backed blue boards [by Maltby, Oxford] (spine slightly darkened, boards lightly rubbed). Provenance : Sir Edward Howard Marsh (1872-1953, his initials in Sassoon's hand on colophon). FIRST EDITION, SECOND [FIRST PUBLISHED] ISSUE, LIMITED TO 81 COPIES, THIS ONE OF 75 COPIES. PRESENTATION COPY TO SIR EDWARD MARSH. Recreations was first printed in an edition of 75 copies of 34 pages, which were then destroyed; the text was extended to 40 pages by the addition of three more poems and reprinted in an edition of 81 copies, of which six were on large paper. This copy was presented to Sir Edward Marsh, a long-standing friend, editor, and patron of Sassoon and his work; Marsh had published the poet's work in his Georgian Poetry series, and Sassoon had dedicated the war poem 'Stretcher Case' to him. On 28 June 1923, Sassoon wrote that, 'The letters I've received about Recreations represent a sort of success but rather a dreary one ... Eddie Marsh calls it "a delightful little book". And R. Graves hails it as "an important achievement"' ( Diaries 1923-1925 , London: 1985, pp. 40-41). Keynes A22.
